Cupressus chengiana

Cupressus chengiana is a plant belonging to the family of the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ). It is native to central China.

Description

Cupressus chengiana can grow as evergreen tree of stature heights of up to 30 meters and diameter at breast height of up to 1 meter reach. The dense, pencil -shaped branches are 1.2 to 2 millimeters thick. Go straight, ascending or descending, but never hanging from the branches off.

The scale-like and curved leaves are 1 to 1.5 millimeters in size and are colored dull green. The leaf tips are blunt. On the underside of leaves is centrally located a striking, often dark colored gland.

The male cones are 2-4 mm in size and contain twelve to 16 Mikrosporophylle. The cones are formed spherical or oblong - ovate, with a diameter of approximately 1.2 to 2 centimeters. For ripening turns they are colored brown or reddish brown. They consist of eight to 14 cone scales each of which carries several seeds. The seeds are flat triangular shaped to oval with a length of 3 to 5 millimeters and a width of 2 to 4 millimeters.

The chromosome number is 2n = 22

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cupressus chengiana located in China. They are found there in southern Gansu and northern and western Sichuan.

Cupressus chengiana thrives at altitudes 800-2900 m. It grows mainly on mountain slopes and in mountain valleys.

System

The first description was in 1964 by as Cupressus chengiana Shiu Ying Hu in Taiwania 10, p 57 A synonym for Cupressus chengiana SY Hu is Chamaecyparis chengiana ( S.Y. Hu) Gaussen.

The type is divided into two or three sub- types. Some of these are regarded as varieties:

  • Cupressus chengiana subsp. chengiana is the nominate form. Your cones consist of eight to ten cone scales. It is found throughout the range.
  • Cupressus chengiana subsp. jiangeensis Silba. Your cones consist of ten to 14 cone scales. Of these subspecies, a tree in Sichuan is just more known.
  • Cupressus chengiana subsp. kansouensis ( Silba ) Silba.

Threats and conservation

Cupressus chengiana is in the IUCN Red List as "vulnerable" out. The main risk is why the overuse and the consequent encroachment of forests is called. The subspecies is jiangeensis as " threatened with extinction " listed as their stock only from a single tree exists. It is used in two entries noted, however, that a re-examination of risk is necessary.
