Curtis Gordon

Curtis Gordon ( * July 27, 1928; † 2 May 2004) was an American country and rockabilly singer. His titles often contained influences of country musician Ernest Tubb and Bob Wills. His nickname was Mr. Personality.

Life

Childhood and youth

Curtis Gordon has been influenced as a young boy by the then sizes of Country Music Ernest Tubb and Bob Wills. In addition, he often listened to old records of Jimmie Rodgers, who also influenced him long term. After winning a local talent contest, Gordon left school as a teenager, to form his own band. But soon he returned because his parents back to school, but continued to play in a band.

Career

After 1952, with his own western swing band won a competition in Atlanta, Georgia, he got a recording contract with RCA Victor. Gordon's first recordings there were a mixture of the Western Swing Bob Wills ' and Hank Thompson and the Honky Tonk Ernest Tubbs, thus they belonged to the so-called country boogie. A good example is here Rompin 'and Stompin' of 1953. During the same year he had the opportunity to contest, first appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and to play as background music for Tubb and Hank Snow. In 1953, Gordon was also a regular in the local country show Dixie Barn Dance on WKAB in Mobile, Alabama.

But after two relatively successful years at RCA joined Gordon 1954 Mercury Records. Starting in 1956, he changed his musical style rockabilly. His title Mobile, Alabama and Draggin ' of 1956 have become classics of the genre. Meanwhile, he had his own radio show in Mobile. But the big break never came, even though some of his tracks from George Jones were re-recorded and he was friends with the successful country singer Roger Miller.

His last recording contract had Gordon at Dollie Records in the early 1960s, after which he headed until the 1980s, a dance club in Georgia. During the rockabilly revival Gordon came back to public and enjoyed great fame in Europe.

Curtis Gordon died on 2 May 2004 at the age of 76 years. He was inducted for his services to the rockabilly music in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
