Cuthbert Butler

Cuthbert Butler, OSB, and Edward Cuthbert Butler ( born May 6, 1858 in Dublin, † April 1, 1934 in London ) was an English historian and Benedictine abbot in Downside Abbey.

Biography

Edward Cuthbert Butler came in 1876 in the Benedictine Downside, whose school he had attended. In 1884 he was ordained a priest and worked as a teacher in Downside in the following years. From 1888 to 1892 he was head of the school. 1896 took over the leadership of Cuthbert Butler Benet House, the Abbey of Downside newly decorated house of studies for the Benedictines at the University of Cambridge. In 1904 he returned to Downside, where he was in 1906 elected second abbot of the monastery. From 1914 to 1921 he was president of the English Benedictine Congregation. In 1922 he resigned from his post as abbot of the monastery Downside and moved into the dependent Downside Priory Ealing ( London), where he remained until his death.

When researchers looked Cuthbert Butler made ​​a name by his work on monasticism in the ancient Church and by his history of the First Vatican Council. In recognition of his services he received in 1908 an honorary doctorate from Trinitiy College in Dublin.
