Cyclopean Isles

The Cyclops (Italian Isole dei Cyclops ) are a small group of islands in the Ionian Sea. They are located off the east coast of Sicily, in the district of the municipality of Aci Trezza Aci Castello. The island group includes the islands Lachea ( the largest of the group), Faraglione Grande ( Faraglione di Santa Maria), Faraglione di Mezzo and Faraglione degli Uccelli, and some rocks.

The name Cyclops comes from Greek mythology. Polyphemus, one of the giant Cyclops, captured Odysseus and his companions. After it was Odysseus managed to hide the giant and escape, several of these boulders hurled after him, who fell into the sea.

Today the islands are because of their unique underwater fauna Nature Reserve Riserva naturale marina Isole Cyclops.
