Cycloped

Cycloped (sometimes Cyclopede ) was one of the locomotives that were registered to participate in the race of Rainhill in 1829.

Of the other reported machines, the Cycloped, a construction of the mathematician and inventor Thomas Shaw Brandreth difference, fundamentally: The vehicle was not driven by steam, but by a festgezurrtes horse on an endless treadmill. Thus they did not meet the conditions set explicitly permitted only steam locomotives to the competition.

Nevertheless, were allowed to participate Cycloped out of competition at the test drives in order to obtain comparative values that could give about the advantages of steam power over animal drive information. The results clearly showed that a driven by a horse locomotive everyone was driven with steam clearly inferior to Power: The Cyclopede reached top speeds only 5-6 miles ( 8 to 9.6 kilometers) per hour, while the winning bike Rocket up to 28 miles (45 km / h) was fast. Thus, the minimum requirements of the competition were already so far below that no other test runs with the Cycloped took place more.
