Cyclopentene is an organic compound with the formula C5H8. It consists of a five-membered unsaturated ring having one double bond. In the homologous series of cycloalkenes is between cyclopentene and cyclohexene, cyclobutene. Formally, it is a simple hydrogenated cyclopentadiene or a simply dehydrated cyclopentane. Cyclopentene has few applications.
Representation
Cyclopentene is obtained by steam cracking of naphtha, with about 2.2 kg per tonne of naphtha cyclopentene incurred. It is, however, efficiently obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene.
Properties
Cyclopentene is a cyclic alkenes for conventional reactions such as addition to the double bond, and cycloadditions. Substitution reactions usually take place in the allylic position. By the catalytic oxidation of cyclopentene with oxygen, cyclopentanone can be synthesized.
