Cyclophoridae

Cyclophorus rafflesi

The Cyclophoridae, also known as Tower snails, [Note 1] are a family in the countryside live snails from the order of Architaenioglossa ( Caenogastropoda ). The family is now understood to a limited extent; the representatives of the family are confined to the tropics and subtropics of the Old and New Worlds.

Features

The dextral housing are usually small and are rarely medium size. The housing shape varies from disc- to hochkonisch. The usually roundish mouth is often modified, sometimes with a notch or a constriction; the last turn can strongly reduce from the turns. It is a mostly circular operculum present, which can be deeply retracted into the housing. It is closely wound spiral and may be calcified or uncalcified. On the outside of the Operkulums accessory deposits may be present.

The head ends in a short proboscis or snout. The antennae are round in cross section, relatively long and taper towards the end something. The eyes are located at the base of the sensor on flat papillae. The creeping is not divided along. The mantle cavity acts as a lung cavity. The radula has seven elements per transverse row. The center plate has usually five, rarely three or seven teeth. The animals are dioecious.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The family is very rich in species, the species are almost worldwide in warm climate areas.

System

So far there is no comprehensive revision of the family. The processing status of many species is very bad. The list of subfamilies and genera is therefore uncertain.
