Cynoscion

Cynoscion nebulosus

Cynoscion is a genus of croakers, which occurs with 24 species in tropical and warm temperate areas of the West Atlantic and the East Pacific. They usually inhabit coastal waters. There are popular food and sport fish due to their tender flesh are known in English as weakfish (soft fish) or seatrout (sea trout).

Features

Cynoscion species are elongated, spindle-shaped fish with laterally flattened and oval body cross-section. The head is cone-shaped with a pointed snout, medium-sized eyes, and without barbels or pores. The mouth is large, with drooping corners of the mouth and the previous lower jaw. The sharp teeth sitting in tight rows in the upper jaw sits a pair of long, pointed fangs. The Vordeckel is smooth-edged. The elongated dorsal fin has six to ten hard jets in front and a hard - and 20 to 30 soft rays behind a deep notch. The anal fin has two short hard jets and 8 to 20 soft rays. The swim bladder has at its front end two short, unbranched appendages.
