Cyril Romney

Cyril B. Romney ( born March 1, 1931 in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, † July 19, 2007 in Miami, Florida ) was a Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands.

Life

Romney initially worked as a teacher before he studied economics at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. Later he completed postgraduate studies in economics and political science at Syracuse University and graduated with a Master.

Romney was in 1969 appointed as the first native of the Treasury ( Financial Secretary ) of the British Virgin Islands and first elected in 1979 as a member of the Legislative Council.

At the general election in November 1983, he was the only successful independent candidate, formed a coalition with the United Party, which he joined as a member, and was Chief Minister. During his nearly three -year term until October 1, 1986, the Virgin Islands have become an offshore financial center, which meant that this one of the highest per capita incomes were measured by the gross domestic product.

After the end of his tenure, he was between 1986 and 1990 leader of the opposition and withdrew from political life after he lost his seat in the Legislative Council in the 1995 elections.
