The D River is a river in Lincoln City in Lincoln County in the U.S. state of Oregon. He is the outflow of the Devils Lake to the Pacific Ocean and is referred to as the shortest river in the world because of its length of only 37 meters.

Geography

The Devils Lake is a 277 acre, but only an average of 2.6 m deep freshwater lake, which is fed by several streams. The D River as its outflow flowing under a concrete bridge of U.S. Highway 101 and flows through after 37 m in the Pacific. Itself in the spring, the flow is not wider than nine and deeper than a meter.

On the southern shore is the state acquired in 1969 by the D River State Recreation Site. The small, 1.6 -acre State Park consists of a sandy stretch of beach and is often very busy. Visitors fly kites or go other recreational activities on the beach after. The visit to the park is free of charge, the park has a parking lot, restrooms and a picnic area. In spring and autumn, the park is the scene of Kite Festival, which is why Lincoln City describes itself as a Kite Capital of the World.

History

Until the 1930s, the river under different names such as The Mouth of Devils Lake, The Channel to Devils Lake, Devils Creek or simply The Outlet was known until 1940, the Chamber of Commerce Delake a US-wide competition for the shortest name for the shortest river in the world auslobte. The winner is the name D, a brief description, which was proposed by Mrs. Johanna Beard of Albany. This name was accepted as the official name of the U.S. Geographic Board of Names. The Geodetic Geographic Board in Washington, DC, confirmed that the D River with a length of 134 m at the time when the tide is the shortest river in the world. The D River was included in the Guinness Book of World Records, the Oregon Department of Transportation set on the banks of signs on the world's shortest river. However, the title was never without controversy, and since 1987 also raises the Roe River in Montana claim to be the shortest river in the world. The Guinness Book of World Records allowed as a compromise that both rivers may carry the title of "shortest river in the world ". In the meantime, however, the category "shortest river in the world " is no longer listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
