Devils Lake (Lincoln County, Oregon)

The Devils Lake is a natural lake in the U.S. state of Oregon. The 277 -acre lake is located east of the city of Lincoln City in Lincoln County. The shallow lake is a maximum 6.4 m deep, its average depth is 2.6 m. The almost five kilometers long and on average 600 m wide lake extends between the city of Lincoln City and the Oregon Coast Range with the Siuslaw National Forest. Main tributaries are Rock Creek at the south end of the lake and the Thompson Creek in the northeast of the lake, the outflow of the lake is the D River in the southwest. The D River applies with as the shortest river in the world, as it flows into the Pacific to just 37 m. The name refers to Devils Lake Indian legends, according to which in the lake lives a monster that attacks man, as a canoe of the chief of the Siletz, Fleet Foot. In the language of the Indians of Lake Neotsu was called. Today is, a district of Lincoln City at the north end of the lake that way.

At the southern part of the lake is the Devils Lake State Recreation Area. The city Delake gave in 1957 a part of the territory of the State of Oregon, through purchases, the area was extended to 1961 on 42 ha. The state park consists of two parts, a campground on the west bank and a parking area on the south shore of the lake. The campground with 32 RV and 50 tent sites located on the western shore near the D River. It is the only camp on the Oregon coast, which is set in a city. The pitches are located between coastal pines and alders, and are separated by a wetland from the lake. From the campsite a footpath leads to the sea, where a boat ramp is located. The wetland is a habitat for many water birds, such as Canada, herons, cormorants, coots and ducks. The lake is wintering grounds for numerous migratory birds, including bald eagles. On the south shore of the lake is the parking area for day visitors, where there is also a boat dock and a ramp as well as picnic tables and a swimming area are located. The lake is a popular fishing waters, but also provides space for water skiing, kayaking and other water sports.
