Dacrydium

Rimu Harzeibe ( Dacrydium cupressinum )

The resin yew trees ( Dacrydium ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family of Podocarpus plants ( Podocarpaceae ). The botanical genus name derives from the Greek: dakra for tear and supposedly refers to the wood.

Dissemination

The distribution of the genus ranges seen from the south of New Zealand to New Caledonia, the islands of Fiji and the Solomon Islands to New Guinea, Indonesia and the Philippines, Thailand and continue to to southern China as the northernmost area.

Description

Dacrydium species are trees or shrubs. The leaves of young plants are shaped differently than on older plants. The leaves of young plants are wide, the older plants have needle-like or scale-like.

They are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The sessile male cones are single, terminal or axillary on the branches. For the terminally standing on the branches, female cones usually only a tap scale is fertile, it is therefore formed at completion of fertilization, only one seed. The seeds are surrounded by an aril and mature within one year. The aril is colored fleshy and bright in some species at maturity.

Use

The yellow to reddish wood is sometimes textured beautifully. It is used, among other things, to build houses and furniture.
