Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group

Daisetsu -zan (Japanese大雪山) is the central highlands of Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. With the Asahi -dake ( 2291 m) is also the highest mountain in Hokkaido. The majority of the area is occupied by the same Daisetsuzan National Park, which is also the largest national park in Japan. The area is also the headwaters of the rivers Ishikari -gawa (石 狩 川) and Chūbetsu -gawa (忠 别 川).

The landscape is of volcanic origin. The last eruption at Asahi -dake stratovolcano took place in 1739. Fumaroles testify today to the volcanic activity of the area.

The vegetation ranges from mixed forest over pine forests to alpine tundra above the tree line.
