Daman district, India

Daman is one of the two districts in the Indian union territory of Daman and Diu. It has about 114,000 inhabitants ( 2001 census ) to 72 km ². Seat of the district administration is the place Daman.

Daman is located on the west coast of India on the Arabian Sea. It is completely surrounded by the district Valsad of Gujarat.

The first Portuguese landed in 1523 in Daman. Since the 1530s, they tried to establish themselves in the field. The city of Daman was named in 1559 occupied by the Portuguese and DaMao. 1588 the whole area was incorporated in Portuguese India. In 1614 they conquered the area of DaMao Pequeno on the right bank of the river Daman Ganga. Daman remained until the military appropriation by India on December 19, 1961 Portuguese colony.

Main livelihood is fishing.
