The University of Damascus (Arabic: جامعة دمشق dschāmicatu -d - dimashq ) is a state university in Damascus and with over 85,000 students and 2,000 academic staff, the largest of the four universities in Syria.

The Damascus University is the oldest university of the country. It was created in 1923 by the merger of Medicine ( founded in 1903 ) and a law school ( founded in 1913 ). Until the founding of the University of Aleppo in 1958 it was called Syrian University and is divided today into 16 faculties:

The courses are taught almost exclusively in Arabic. The affiliated Institute for Arabic Language offers language courses for non- Arabic-speaking foreigners.
