Dammarie-lès-Lys
Dammarie -les -Lys is a commune with 20,661 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Seine- et- Marne in the Île- de -France region. It belongs to the district Melun and Canton Perthes.
Geography
The site is adjacent to the southwest city of Melun, which is located on the other side of the Seine. The center of Paris is located north-northwest and 62 km away. South of the village, the Forêt de Fontainebleau spreads.
History
Dammarie -les -Lys was first mentioned in the 13th century. The " dam aria" in the place name derives from a prayer house, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Attractions
Its most famous attraction of the village are the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey, which was founded in 1244 by Blanche of Castile.
Management
The city has about 20,659 inhabitants (as of 1999), mayor since 1983 ( 2008-2014 re-elected) Jean -Claude Mignon from the UMP.
