Dan Gillerman

Dan Gillerman (Hebrew דן גילרמן; * in Palestine in 1944 ) was from 1 January 2003 until the end of July 2008, the 13th Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations.

He studied at the Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, worked as CEO of several Israeli companies, as a board member of the First International Bank of Israel, was a director of Bank Leumi and the Central Bank of Israel.

Gillerman advocated economic liberalization Israel and the free market economy. With regard to economic aspects of the peace process, he tried through discussions with Arab and Palestinian leaders to promote further economic cooperation in the region.

On 14 June 2005 he was elected to the position of Vice - President of the 60th General Assembly of the United Nations and was after the UN envoy Abba Eban 1952, the second Israeli to hold the post. The Israeli candidature had been supported mainly by Western European countries. The Bar - Ilan University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007.

Gillerman is married and has two children, a son and a daughter.
