Dang Thai Son

Thái Sơn Đằng ( born July 2, 1958 in Hanoi, Vietnam) is an international concert pianist. He gained prominence when he won the first prize in October 1980 at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

Life

He comes from a family of artists, both his father Dang Dinh Hung and his mother were musicians Thai Thi Lien, or pianists. He studied first with his mother in Hanoi until he was discovered by the Russian pianist Isaac Katz in 1974 that brought him to the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied with Vladimir Natanson and Dmitry Bashkirov.

Since winning the Chopin Competition, he has performed around the world in almost all prestigious concert halls with the major orchestras and recorded with German Grammophon, Melodia, Polskie Nagrania, CBS Sony and other labels. He is known in Japan and North America but also in Europe.

Since 1987 he is guest professor at the Kunitachi Music College (Tokyo ), and currently teaches at the University of Montreal ( Quebec, Canada). In October 1999, he gave a master class in Berlin, together with Murray Perahia and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

His repertoire includes most of the piano works of Chopin and many works by other romantics and impressionists and the piano concertos of almost all great composers ( Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Grieg, Mozart, Rachmaninov, etc.)

Since 1995 he is a Canadian citizen.
