Daniel Auber

Daniel -François- Esprit Auber ( born January 29, 1782 Caen, † May 12, 1871 in Paris) was a French composer.

Auber initially made according to the will of his parents, a business education in London. When he returned to Paris in 1803, he was encouraged by Luigi Cherubini to compose music for the stage. The breakthrough he achieved in 1820 with his opera La bergère châtelaine ( The shepherdess as a noblewoman ). In 1842 Auber was director of the Paris Conservatory, and finally in 1857 Imperial Kapellmeister. Auber died at the age of 89 years in Paris. He is buried there in the Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Life

Auber was born in Normandy, where his parents had made a trip from Paris. He was diagnosed by his father, a wealthy art dealer in Paris, for the trade date. From hobby he drove the way music, and the compositions, in which he tried ( romances, cello concertos for the cellist Jacques- Michel de Lamare, trios, and an operetta, etc.) were added approvingly.

An envelope in the proportions of the father finally obliged him to make music his life profession. He underwent careful studies at the Conservatory under Luigi Cherubini line, composed after the end of first Mass ( from the individual pieces later in the opera La Muette de Portici went over ) and then brought several small operas on the stage, hardly received attention.

Only with the comic opera La bergére châtelaine (1820 ), for which, Feydeau had supplied him with the text and Rossini, who charmed all that time served as a model, he began to like it. From the biggest advantage for Auber was his connection with Eugène Scribe who wrote him the lyrics and the type and direction of talent fit entirely to him.

First, followed by operas such as Emma, Léocadie and Leicester, have also enjoyed success, but not much was known beyond France. The first opera, which also made in Germany (especially through mediation Henriette Sontag ) allbeliebt Auber's name was The Snow (1823 ).

Even greater success the following year, had his masons and fitters. After the execution of some other operas, such as Fiorilla (1826 ), The Bride ( 1827), which are characterized by attractive games, but lack in the whole of the force, entered Auber in 1828 with his major work, The Dumb Girl of Portici out what a triumphal tour of the world made and placed him at the head of the new direction of the French grand opera.

The next performance of Auber, the charming comic opera Fra Diavolo (1829 ), was a favorite of the audience. In his numerous later works Auber has not reached that level again; the routine prevailed, striving for effect, often with a refined application of external resources came to the fore. Thus, in his great operas Gustav or the Masked Ball ( 1833), The Feensee (1839 ) and the comic operas The Ambassadress (1836 ), The Black Domino ( 1837), The Krondiamanten (1841 ), Carlo Broschi or the devil's share (1842 ), Haydée (1847 ) and The Circassian (1861 ).

Auber, already appointed in 1825 a Knight of the Legion of Honour, in 1829 became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, 1842 Luigi Cherubini's office director of the Paris Conservatory, 1847 Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1857 and received the honorary title of imperial court music director. With his opening music for the Great Exhibition of 1862 he had to stand in front of Meyerbeer. After a hiatus of several years of his work he surprised shortly before his death in the world with three new operas: " La fiancée du roi de Garbe " (1864 ), Le premier jour de bonheur (1868 ) and Reves d' amour (1869 ), the however, despite many lovely details, but only a moderate success were able to achieve.

Auber died on 13 May 1871 in Paris, after which he was a year ago, resigned from the leadership of the Conservatory, to which he had acquired notable merits. He has left throughout over 40 operas.

Absolutely the child of the modern culture of Paris, he created the one form of opera, which thus corresponded to the metropolitan life and taste the Scribeschen lust and intrigue and, and in which the expression had easier resign, natural sensation behind the elegant conversational tone.

Understandably it is that this genre is light ( can be described as the most successful productions well masons and fitters and Fra Diavolo ) the game fluency of French opera singers is as indispensable as the Rossini Opera virtuosity Italian singing.

Under Auber's grave and serious opera La Muette de Portici is quite isolated. With this work, the composer came out of the frivolous Parisian enjoying life out on the hot bottom of a politically unsettled times and knew important situations to illustrate through music. In Auber Testament a price of 5000 francs was exposed to be distributed annually for the best comic opera.
