Daniel Berger (engraver)

Gottfried Daniel Berger ( born October 25, 1744 in Berlin, † November 17, 1825 ) was a German engraver.

Berger received initially by his father Friedrich Gottlieb Berger, who was also an engraver, lessons, then from 1757 by the French painter and director of the Prussian Academy of Arts Blaise Nicolas Lesueur. As of May 1774, the training by the court engraver Georg Friedrich Schmidt was supplemented, however already died eight months later. Berger but continued to receive professional support from Lesueur.

By Lesueur mediation Berger was able to establish contacts with influential figures including the painter and director of the Art Gallery of Sanssouci Matthias of Austria, the bank director and connoisseur Carl Philipp Caesar and anatomy professor Johann Friedrich Meckel. This Berger received numerous important commissions, such as the production of illustrations for medical and biological works or reproductions of paintings.

In 1778 Berger was a full member of the Academy of Arts, in 1787 he was inducted into the rectorship and was appointed professor of art of engraving. 1816 Berger Vice- Director of the Academy.
