Daniel Brendel von Homburg

Daniel Brendel of Homburg (* March 22, 1523 in Aschaffenburg, † March 22, 1582 ibid ) was from 1555 to Elector and Archbishop of Mainz from the family Brendel von Homburg.

Life

He was elected on April 22, 1555 to the archbishop, where he only got one vote more than his rather Lutheran minded rival, the Count Palatine Reichard. He received episcopal consecration at Pentecost 1557 in Aschaffenburg by the Speyer bishop Rudolf von and Frankenstein, who had lobbied for its sustainable choice.

He died 1582 and was buried in Mainz Cathedral.

Work

His work as archbishop is closely linked with the history of the University of Mainz, he founded but in 1561 the college of the Jesuits in Mainz, which was already in 1568 with several hundred members of officially recognized as part of the university. The Jesuits took over then almost all chairs of the theological and philosophical faculties.
