Daniël Mijtens

Daniël Mijtens or Daniel Mytens the Elder ( * 1590 in Delft, † 1647 in The Hague ) was a major English painter with Flemish roots.

Life

Daniël Mijtens came from a Flemish family of artists and studied with Michiel van Mierevelt in The Hague. To 1618 he was demonstrably in the service of leading art collector Sir Thomas Howard worked 21 Earl of Arundel in London. Two years later he received his first royal commission. After the death of Paul van Somer Mijtens was his successor as court painter. Shortly thereafter, he was repeatedly employed by the Prince of Wales, and this supported him in 1624 at the naturalization. After the death of James I. he retained the title Royal portrait painter. The following year, Mijtens was commissioned by Charles I for six months in the Netherlands in order to familiarize yourself with the art of his time. By the year 1632 Mijtens retained its pre-eminence as a portrait painter of the king, then Anthony van Dyck relieved him, and he retired soon disappointed to The Hague back.
