Daniel Soreau

Daniel Soreau (* in Antwerp; † buried on March 28, 1619 in Hanau, Germany ) was a German painter who has established the genre of still life in Hanau and region.

Life

Daniel Soreau received in 1586 the right of citizenship in Frankfurt am Main and married Johanna Fleming. From his father Johann Soreau from Tournai, he inherited a wool trading company. This company he ran with his brother Simon Soreau, and his brother Stefan van Ninhoven, but could not prevent their bankruptcy in 1601. At times, the Company had the entire wool trade of Hesse and the Wetterau controlled.

Soeraus son Daniel was baptized on March 11, 1599 in Frankfurt, the twins Isaac and Peter on 17 October 1604.

As spokesperson for the Italians Protestants he was in 1597, together with Peter t'Kindt, Cornelius van Dael Louis de Blécourt and other part of the reason that many religious refugees from Frankfurt migrated into the newly founded Hanau Neustadt.

He supported his knowledge from the fields of architecture and art there, the city's founder Philip Louis II of Hanau- coins mountain in construction projects, such as the Walloon -Dutch Church.

Work

So far, no paintings are known, probably assignable by Soreau. However, there are one or two according to Thieme-Becker engravings by Johann Jenet, the basis Soreau be attributed to: A representation of the Caritas Romana, in the Albertina in Vienna with the reference from Soreau, as well as a picture of the beheading of John the Baptist. A fruit basket still life has been assigned to him several times, but never has enough. It is now believed that it comes from Jacob Huldonck who influenced Isaac Soreau.

Student

Among his pupils were his nephew Daniel ( born December 11, 1597), and his two sons Isaac († not before 1645) and Peter ( † before 1672). He also taught Peter Binoit, who later Soreaus niece Sarah married. Although Daniel Soreau, to say that he wanted to teach only his friends or relatives, he also accepted Sebastian Stoskopff as a student of the workshop Soreaus took over after his death.

Reception

Mention is Soreau twice in the Academie Germans by Joachim von Sandrart in 1675, who had received from Soreau first art lessons. In addition, it is the second edition of Architectvra.
