Daphne Sheldrick

Daphne Sheldrick DBE Majorie ( born June 4, 1934) is the founder of an elephant breeding center.

She was born in 1934 as the daughter of a farmer in Kenya's Nakuru District and grew up with many animals on the family operation. Already with three years she received from workers an orphaned wild animal she teased. She attended the Nakuru Primary School and the Kenya High School. She married David Sheldrick, with whom she worked in Tsavo National Park.

In the 1970s, she managed one of the largest and most important successes. As elephants do not tolerate cow's milk as a substitute food, it has long been impossible to get orphaned pups alive. Daphne Sheldrick has developed a special blend of milk with vegetable fat.

Founded by her elephant breeding center David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in the immediate vicinity of Nairobi is now world famous. Since the existence of the institution found 50 juveniles admission to the ward. Daphne Sheldrick is considered the " mother of the elephant " and is internationally recognized as an expert. Among numerous other awards, she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 2000.

2006 hit Queen Elizabeth II Daphne Sheldrick to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the first time in Kenya since independence in 1963.
