Dartmouth Castle and Church of St Petroc 's

Dartmouth Castle is a castle at the mouth of the River Dart to Dartmouth in the county of Devon in the UK.

Location

It protected along with the lying on the opposite bank Kingswear Castle harbor against invaders from the sea. Immediately adjacent is the Church of St Petroc 's.

History

Since 1388 there has been a fortress here. The current building is the oldest surviving English coastal fortress, which was built for guns. It was built from 1481 to 1495 and was extended in the 16th and 17th centuries. Dartmouth Castle was used until the 19th century as a fortress.

Today the castle is owned by the English Heritage and can be visited for a fee
