Das Megaphon

Megaphone is a street newspaper that is sold in Graz and some other towns in Styria of people in social need right on the street. The megaphone is published monthly with a circulation of 15,000. Half of the sales price remains the sellers.

The megaphone is a project of Caritas Graz. For the first time the newspaper was published in October 1995. Thus, it was the first street newspaper in Austria. In addition to the editorial section, which deals with social issues, there are also cultural information and a calendar of events. Furthermore, a free access to current scientific topics is offered with the megaphone UNI. This offer is primarily aimed at people who have no access to universities on the basis of education, background or social position.

Was initiated by the megaphone of Maria Laura Bono, who was also chief editor until 1998. Then Harald Schmied took over this function.

In July 2003, the megaphone hosted the first Homeless World Cup soccer tournament in Graz. Here, teams competed from around the world at the main square of Graz against each other. All team members were homeless. Austria won the tournament against England and the Netherlands. In another episode, the football tournament has become established as an annual event, the venue is set annually.

Harald Schmied dealt increasingly with the development of the Homeless World Cup and so, in 2004 Judith Schwentner the function of the editor in chief. 2007 joined the editorial office and distribution in the Auschlößl. The building on the edge of the Augarten in Graz also houses a café, which is run by megaphone.

From early 2009 to December 2009 was Gerhild Wrann Head of MEGAPHON and cafes Auschlössl and was replaced in December by Annelies Pichler.

Awards

The megaphone UNI project received the Human Rights Award of the Province of Styria. The award was presented on 28 January 2010 by Governor Franz Voves to Annelies Pichler and Gerhild Wrann.
