The Riddle of the Sands is a German television series from the year 1984. It is based on the novel The Riddle of the Sands Erskine Childers Robert the Irish writer.
Action
The young Englishman Carruthers is invited by his former fellow student Davies for duck hunting on a yacht in the North Sea in late summer 1904. Although they have lost after graduating from the eyes, the man about town accepts the invitation, because he is forced by his superiors at the Foreign Office to to learn about the fleet upgrade in Germany in the hope of more. However, instead of an expected luxury yacht with staff, the Dulcibella out to be a small boat that is sailed by Davies -handed. During the trip Gathering Storm, Doll Man leads Davies with the Dulcibella on a sandbank and sails away in the storm. Davies is stranded and is saved only by luck of a merchant ship. As Carruthers arrives on Norderney, a letter from Davies, who proposed a meeting in Flensburg awaits him. There he is convinced by Davies to convert Doll Man. You will return to the North Sea.
You get out that Doll Man apparently with the German captain of Brüning and the engineer Böhme operates a treasure salvage on Memmertsand. There should be a sunk Napoleonic gold transport. As Davies and Carruthers in the Mapping of tidal creeks find the corpse of a drowned German infantrymen, they decide Memmertsand at night to visit, especially since all participants go to great lengths to persuade the two Englishmen to leave. Carruthers overheard on Memmertsand a meeting in which a high attendance is announced. Back to Norderney, they note that Doll Man is actually a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Obviously want to Doll man and Brüning did not prevent the detection of the Wadden Sea by Davies, but hold a much larger project secret.
Carruthers is back summoned to the Foreign Office. He travels to the bill from, but returns and manages to be at the mysterious visit here: Wilhelm II inspected at night, the preparations for the shipment of a German invasion fleet to England.
Davies and Carruthers kidnap and Clara Doll man, to bring them to the Dulcibella to England and there to indict man Doll. They are pursued by von Brüning with his torpedo cruisers, Doll Man flees from the Dulcibella by jumping into the water, and von Brüning can escape the Dulcibella.
In London, Davies and Carruthers are arrested without explanation. Only Doll Man, now Commodore, it clears up the plans of British intelligence before both be set at liberty.
Davies marries Clara and is taken as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
Production
The co-production of Radio Bremen and Multimedia ( Berlin) from a screenplay by Christoph Mattner was not mentioned in the book of the East Frisian action places Bensersiel and Norderney, these places were modeled at the outer locations in Tetenbüll on eiderstedt and Baltrum. The inner rotational work was carried out in a water tank of the old hall of the Husum Shipyard. For special effects the experience and know how from the production of the film were used the boat.
