Dasyproctidae

Agouti

  • Agoutis ( Dasyprocta )
  • Acouchis ( Myoprocta )

Agoutis and Acouchis ( Dasyproctidae ) are a mammalian family from the order of rodents. The system is controversial, often to this group also the Pacas ( cuniculus ) to be counted. Genetic studies have shown that they are not related too closely with them.

There are two genera:

  • Agoutis ( Dasyprocta )
  • Acouchis, also known as dwarf or tailed agoutis called ( Myoprocta )

Pacas and agoutis are similar in physique and in the structure of the teeth, the differences lie in the spotted coat of Pacas compared to the single-colored fur of the agoutis, in the number of toes of the front feet ( agoutis have three functional toes, Pacas four) and in details in the construction the skull.

All species of this family are restricted to Central and South America. They have stocky bodies with strong legs that are forming in hufartigen claws and ideal for running.
