Data Transformation Services

Data Transformation Services, or DTS, is a collection of packages, components and utilities that allows Extract, Transform and Load processes during import into or export from a database to automate. DTS are integrated into the Microsoft SQL Server and are most often used with this. An independent use with other databases is also possible.

DTS makes it possible to load data from heterogeneous sources such as OLE DB, ODBC, or text files and in an arbitrary database supported to transform. In addition, these steps can be carried out regularly on a schedule. It is also possible to send files via FTP and call external programs. In conjunction with a version control system such as Microsoft Visual SourceSafe DTS can also serve as an alternative for backup packages.

Starting with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 DTS from SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS ) has been replaced.
