A database server as part of a " multi- server architecture" houses one or more database systems, accessing the application from a remote server. Both systems are usually operated at a high data volume on two different computers actually. This serves the purpose of gathering data on the number of clients or to provide many clients.

Database server software

Distributed database systems are Firebird, Oracle, DB2, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL or MySQL. These software packages manage the data and resulting requests and queries.

Database server hardware

Physically, the database server in the smaller systems is a normal server with server hardware. In larger systems, often designed specifically for use as a database server computer as an IBM System i5 (formerly AS/400 ) or Digital Alpha are 8400 Digital Equipment Corporation used.
