Datça Peninsula

Geographical location

The Datça or Reşadiye peninsula, formerly the Doric Peninsula or Knidos peninsula ( Hersonissos Cnidia ) called, is a 80 km long, narrow peninsula in the Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey. It separates the Gulf of Gokova (north) from the Gulf of Hisaronu. It is located west of the city of Marmaris and north of the islands of Rhodes and Symi. In western extension to Nisyros is.

The north coast is flat, with extensive bays in which blows in the summer the Meltemi wind. The south coast is rocky and rugged. Due to its natural beauty and its many bays and harbors, the peninsula is often traveled by private yachts, and lies on the route of many boat tours, which usually start in Bodrum or Marmaris.

The new location is in the middle of the Datça Peninsula. At the western tip lies the ancient port city of Knidos.

Name

Because of their colonization by Dorian colonists from the Peloponnese it was also called the Dorian Peninsula.

The name pays tribute to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Reşadiye V. Reşad, but is now rarely used.
