Daursky Nature Reserve

The State Nature and Biosphere Reserve " Daurski " (Russian Государственный природный биосферный заповедник " Даурский » ) is a Russian nature reserve, which is located in the steppes of Transbaikalia Daurian region on the border with Mongolia.

The reserve was established in 1987 to protect the dry steppes and wetlands in the steppe region Dauriens. There continues to be an increase in the buffer zone now consists of an area of ​​208,600 ha, of which form the main part, about 163,800 ha, a buffer zone. The core zone is divided into nine individual regions which are embedded in the buffer zone. Together, these core zone areas comprise about 44,800 ha in the 1980s, the establishment of the Przewalski's horse was planned in the area, but this was prevented by the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today there is again such plans. The reserve is home to 48 mammal species, 317 bird species, three species of reptiles and three amphibians, four fish species, as well as 800 species of insects. The reserve is an important sanctuary for the Mongolian gazelle, also called Dzeren, which in this area has its only remaining deposits in Russia. The animals have increased in recent years and their number within the reserve is according to the information of the Director Vadim Kiriljuk again 3600-3800 animals. These are distributed in the region, mainly to the Rajone Ononski, Borsja and Zabaikalsk. Other species on the Red List are the manul and Daurian hedgehog.

Recently, another reserve, Dolina Zerenow was (Valley of Dzeren ) founded to ensure the migration of Dzeren between Russia and Mongolia.
