David A. Bokee

David Alexander Bokee ( born October 6, 1805 in New York City; † March 15, 1860 in Washington DC) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1849 and 1851 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

David Alexander Bokee was born about seven years before the outbreak of the British - American War in New York City and grew up there. He attended public schools and then went commercial transactions after. Bokee studied law and began practicing as an attorney after receiving his approval. He was 1840-1843 as well as 1845-1848 president in Brooklyn Board of Aldermen. In addition, he sat 1846-1849 in the Senate from New York and worked 1848-1860 as a trustee for the New York Life Insurance Co.. Politically he belonged to the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1848 he was in the second electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry C. Murphy on March 4, 1849. He retired after March 3, 1851 from the Congress. President Fillmore then appointed him Naval Officer of Customs for the Port of New York, a position he held from 1851 to 1853. Bokee was then active in the merchant marine. He died about a year before the outbreak of the Civil War on March 15, 1860 in Washington DC and was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
