David Armitage Bannerman

David Armitage Bannerman (* November 27, 1886, † April 6, 1979 ) was a British ornithologist.

After graduating at Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1909, he undertook extended trips to Africa, the West Indies, South America and the islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

Retired for health reasons in the military service, he served for four years during the First World War, the British Red Cross in France. Then he got up to his retirement in 1951, a job at the Natural History Museum in London. During this time he refused twice from the post of museum director of the British Museum. He was the chairman of the British Ornithologists ' Union from 1932 to 1935 and editor of the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists ' Club in 1914 until 1915. Moreover, he was Vice President of the British Ornithologists ' Union and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He has written several articles for the journal Ibis.

Bannerman first described species of birds, such as the Pemba White-eye ( Zosterops vaughani ) and the Canary Islands Oystercatcher (Haematopus meadewaldoi ). Bird species such as the Bannerman's Turaco ( Tauraco bannermani ), the Bannerman's Sunbird ( Cyanomitra bannermani ) and the Bannerman's Weaver (Ploceus bannermani ) were named after him.
