David (Bernini)

The David by Gianlorenzo Bernini created a sculpture 1623-1624. It was commissioned by Cardinal Montalto in order. But when he died in 1623, Scipione Borghese was then still unfinished figure. The marble sculpture of David is still located in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.

Supposedly Bernini created them according to its mirror image. Cardinal Maffeo Barberini himself is said to have kept him for this work the mirror. Bernini does not consider himself entirely to the requirements of the biblical David. He does not represent a youth, but a vigorous young man who is just about to stretch the slingshot to Goliath entgegenzuschleudern the stone.

The narrative element reveals itself by bypassing the sculpture. Bernini has thoroughly studied his predecessors. Already Donatello, Andrea del Verrocchio and Michelangelo made David sculptures. The novelty of Bernini's version is the strong emotion of the figure, a feature which can be seen in many other of his sculptures.
