David Horler

David "Dave" Horler ( born September 10, 1943 in Lymington ) is a British jazz trombonist, bandleader and arranger.

Life and work

Horler comes from a musical family; his father Ronnie Horler (1920-2005) was active as a professional big band trumpeter and his younger brother John is also a jazz musician. From the age of five, he learned piano; fourteen year came the valve trombone to do so. He studied from 1960 to 1963 at the Royal Academy of Music. He was from 1970 to 1973 a member of the BBC Radio Orchestra and then freelance work for Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby and others. In 1980 he came first trombonist, composer and arranger for WDR Dance Orchestra under Werner Müller from which the WDR Big Band Cologne emerged that he helped to shape and its member he remained until 2008. He worked there as an assistant conductor. He currently directs the large-scale Rhine Phillis Jazz Orchestra.

Horler also be heard on albums by Kurt Edelhagen, Kenny Wheeler, Tony Kinsey, Peter Herbolzheimer, Heinz Kretzschmar, Peter Herborn, Vince Mendoza and his daughter Natalie Horler.
