John Horler

John Douglas Horler ( born February 26, 1947) is a British jazz pianist and composer.

Life and work

Horler comes from a musical family; his father Ronnie Horler (1920-2005) was active as a professional big band trumpeter and his older brother Dave is also a jazz musician. He began his studies at age 16 at the Royal Academy of Music. He is best known for his roles in the bands of John Dankworth and Cleo Laine. In 1977 he accompanied the singer Ernestine Anderson in their recordings for the Concord label. He also played with trumpeter Harry Allen ( Someone to Light Up My Life ) and Ronnie Ross and Tony Coe. He accompanied many American musicians such as Chet Baker, Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Pepper Adams, Bud Shank and Shorty Rogers. In 1983 he was involved in Peter King's album East 34th Street ( Spotlite ). Emerged since 1993 own albums, among others, for the English Spotlite label. He also played with Kenny Wheeler album Kayak ( Ah Um, 1992). In 1998 he took up with John Dankworth Album Moon Valley, 2001 Ken Peplowski the Ellington valley.

Stylistically, it is reminiscent of Bill Evans.

He is also the uncle of Natalie Horler, which became known as the frontwoman of the dance trio Cascada.
