Peter King (saxophonist)

Peter King ( born August 11, 1940 in Kingston -upon -Thames, Surrey ) is a British saxophonist and clarinetist of modern jazz.

Life and work

Peter King is self-taught and played with fifteen years until clarinet, then switched to the alto saxophone as his main instrument. His debut as a professional musician, he had in 1959 in the London jazz club Ronnie Scott; In the same year he was honored by the Melody Maker as New Star. Then he played as a sideman on countless sessions, especially in the British bebop scene; 1960/61, he was a member of the orchestra by John Dankworth, played in the big bands of Maynard Ferguson, Tubby Hayes, Harry South and Stan Tracey, also in smaller formations with Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Red Rodney, Hampton Hawes, Al Haig, Nat Adderley, Dick Morrissey and others. In the band of Ray Charles, he toured Europe and also accompanied singers such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks and Anita O'Day. In 1982 he accompanied the bebop veteran Al Haig at a concert in Hampstead, 1985, he performed as a soloist as well as a composer and arranger with the Brussels Radio Bigband. Later, he led his own bands and recorded with guest musicians such as Alan Skidmore, Alec Dankworth and Guy Barker, a number of albums. King played occasionally in recordings with Stan Tracey and was a member of tentett of Charlie Watts. In 1990 he was a soloist in Colin Towns Mask Orchestra, 1997, he played with George Coleman ( Blues Inside Out ).
