David R. Knechtges

David R. Knechtges ( born October 23, 1942 in the U.S.) is a professor of " East Asian languages ​​" and literature at the University of Washington and a renowned China caster with a focus on ancient Chinese literature.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in Chinese with Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington in 1964. A year later, in 1965 his Master of Arts in East Asian Languages ​​and Literature at Harvard University. In 1968 his Ph. D. in Chinese language and literature.

Knechtges is known for his translation of the Wenxuan, an anthology of early Chinese works. The complete translation was a 25 year old work of 1977 to 2003.

In October 2006 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
