David R. Lindberg

David R. Lindberg ( * 1948, USA) is an American professor of integrative biology and malacologist at the University of California, Berkeley. Besides work on group of Patellogastropoda he is known for the taxonomy of Ponder & Lindberg (1997).

Work

The focus of his work is in the field of phylogeny of the Patellogastropoda as well as various other snail groups. One of its results is the renaming of the order Patellogastropoda Docoglossa in (1986).

His main work is in a new taxonomy of the worm. Based on new information turned out that until the 1990s valid, even going back to J.Thiele taxonomy of the worm paraphylische taxa had. It was particularly significant that the particular concerned the very far above in the hierarchy of subclass Prosobranchia. It ends the tripartite division of the class Gastropoda was therefore no longer tenable. With Winston F. Ponder, he suggested a cleanup of the taxonomy of the worm. A first step was to replace the three-division by a developmentally oriented motivated dichotomy. With Winston F. Ponder, therefore, he led the new subclass Eogastropoda a (early worm ). The counterpart is the subclass of Orthogastropoda ( Real snails). In a second step, the revision was continued consistently downward. As the result of a new taxonomy with strictly monophyletic groups was proposed. This proposal was accepted and the taxonomy is now considered taxonomy of the worm by Ponder & Lindberg (1997 ) is known. She is the last date taxonomy of the worm, which is done by purely morphological principles. Since the taxonomy of Bouchet detaching & Rocroi (2005) Phylogenetic aspects are in the foreground.

Currently, David R. Lindberg professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a trustee of the University of California Museum of Paleontology and co-editor of the journal Molecular Systematics and Phylogeography of Mollusks.
