Winston Ponder

Frank Winston Ponder ( born 1944 ) is a New Zealand malacologist. He has discovered, described and named many marine species of snails, particularly micro snails. Ponder was instrumental in building one of the largest mollusc collections at the Australian Museum in Sydney. However, his major work is published in 1997 by David R. Lindberg taxonomy of the worm.

Training

Winston F. Ponder studied at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He holds the following qualifications: B.Sc. (1963 ), M.Sc. with 1st Class Honours (1965 ), Ph.D. (1968) and was awarded the D.Sc. (1991 ) awarded.

Career as a researcher

Ponder was senior researcher in the Department of Malacology at the Australian Museum in Sydney ( Australia). He was instrumental in building its collection of mollusc Expo antenna. Under his leadership, it became one of the world's richest of its kind After more than forty years of successful research career, he finished his work at the museum. He is now retired and remains the museum as an honorary member.

Winston F. Ponder himself published publications and was also active as a publisher. He is the managing editor of several scientific societies " Malacological Society of Australasia ", the " Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County ", the " South Australian Museum " in Adelaide and the magazine " molluscan Research".

Ponder was president of the " Society of Australian Systematic Biologists ".

Scientific Contributions

His entry into the academic career began about 1964. During this time he worked with Richard Dell and Alan Beu to exhibit collections on Antarctica. Mussels ( Bivalvia ), chitons ( Polyplacophora ) and Kahnfüßer ( Scaphopoda ): As a result of this activity a monograph on some classes of Antarctic molluscs originated. Since then he has published more than 100 books and articles. Many of the publications deal with Australian freshwater molluscs as well as the conservation of invertebrates.

His greatest scientific contribution was a new taxonomy of snails ( Gastropoda ), which he published together with David R. Lindberg 1997. It stands in the continuity of the taxonomies of H.Milne Edwards ( 1848) and J.Thiele ( 1929-1935 ) and is the last major publication on the taxonomy of the worm, which is based on morphological principles. Ie, it is based on external and internal features of the screws and not by genetic methods of DNA and RNA analysis.

The taxonomy solves the problem of Polyphylie the subclass of the Prosobranchia by splitting this taxon. She led in consequence to a new classification of snails, which was instrumental to the introduction of the taxonomy of Bouchet & Rocroi ( 2005).

In 2008, he was with David R. Lindberg editor of the book " Phylogeny and Evolution of the Mollusca ". Due to the re-examination and evaluation of morphological characteristics and molecular and fossil data created 36 articles by experts, gave an overview of the current knowledge of the evolutionary history of mollusks.

2008 Winston F. Ponder for lifetime achievement in the study of marine molluscs won the prestigious Australian Marine Sciences Association Silver Jubilee Award. In 2009 he was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales.
