Dawlish ( IPA: [ dɔ lɪʃ ː ] ) is a small town on the south coast of Devon, southern England, about 15 miles from Exeter.

Geographical Location

Dawlish lies at the mouth of the small river Dawlish Water ( also called The Brook ), between a Rotsandsteinkliff and offshore sand bay. The latter is limited by the so-called "South Devon Railway sea wall ", probably the most photographed railway retaining wall in the UK. On this railway embankment have been running since the turn of 1846/47 the trains of the South Devon Railway Company. At her along the South West Coast Path leads. Behind the dam, facing the city, there is a small public park, called The Lawn.

History

First settlements are detected before the birth of Christ, but they were higher than the present-day settlement area on the slopes of the surrounding hills. Its first inhabitants may have lived on fishing and salt production. The place name has changed repeatedly over time. The oldest proven tradition ago should have been called the name Deawlisc. That is as much as Devil Water, that devil water. Other names interpretations can be found in the Domesday Book.

Around 800 AD the Danes invaded the region, but left the place untouched. From 1050 until the 19th century belonged to Dawlish Exeter Cathedral.

With the opening of the railway line along the south coast by the South Devon Railway Company began a significant upswing in the village. By train the townspeople and the place came became a popular seaside resort.
