Daybreak in Udi is a British documentary from 1949, the Oscar for the best documentary received at the Academy Awards 1950.

Action and Awards

Financed by the British government documentary reports on the construction of a hospital birth in the territory of the tribe of Udi in today's Nigerian state of Enugu, with the help of British government officials. Here, the promoter of the project, two progressive young teacher must prevail against the resistance within his own tribe, because the construction is seen as an affront to the tradition and culture of the place. In the end, however, the connection succeeds the views of progressives and traditionalists.

The film was not only awarded the 1950 Oscar for Best Documentary, but also won the British Film Academy Award in 1950 for Best Documentary. He was also nominated for the United Nations Award of the British Film Academy.

Large parts of the film were taken in 1953 in a two-part documentary entitled Savage World.
