Degel HaTorah

Degel HaTorah (Hebrew for " the banner of the Torah ") is an Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox party in Israel. The " banner " in the name is deliberately chosen counterpoint to the flag of the State of Israel.

Degel HaTorah was established in 1988 as a splinter of the Agudat Jisra'el and was founded by Rabbi Elazar Menachem chess. It represents the non- Hasidic ultra-Orthodox part of Judaism, so in the tradition of Lithuanian mitnagdim. In the 1988 elections, she was able to win two seats and was a ( non-executive ) of the Government of National Unity to. Since the parliamentary elections in 1992 the party joined with the Agudat Jisra'el on a common list (United Torah Judaism ). This alliance broke up in 2004 but during the 16th Knesset in the question on entry into the government of Ariel Sharon. Before the elections in 2006, however, was the re- merger. Of the six seats that received the United Torah Judaism, two Degel HaTorah went to. They are perceived by Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev. These two deputies represent the party in the 18th Knesset elected in 2009.
