Deinogalerix koenig waldi

Deinogalerix ( " fearsome Hedgehog" ) is an extinct genus of rats hedgehogs ( Galericinae ) and lived about 10 million years ago, in the late Miocene, endemic to the paleo- island Gargano, which is now connected as a peninsula with the mainland of Italy.

With a skull length of up to 20 inches, an overall length of 60 centimeters and an estimated weight of 10 kg is one the largest species, Deinogalerix koenig waldi, the largest known members of the hedgehog. There are four other species are known.

Deinogalerix possessed as today's rats hedgehogs ( Galericinae ) no spines, but a coat of long, bristly hairs.
