Déirdre de Búrca

Déirdre de Búrca (* October 1963 ) is an Irish politician and was from 2007 to 2010 in the 23rd Seanad Éireann senator.

Originally from Loughlinstown, County Dublin de Búrca was originally a primary school teacher. After three years in the profession, she began to study psychology at University College Dublin. After that, she worked for over ten years as a psychologist in the rehabilitation field.

Her political career began in 1999 when she was first elected for the Green Party in the Wicklow County Council. 2004 saw her re-election and the election in the Bray Town Council. 2007 failed her candidacy for a seat in the 30th Dáil Éireann as already in 2002.

In the course of participation in the government of their party de Búrca was appointed by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to Seanad Éireann senator in 23 in 2007 and was therefore beside Dan Boyle to the first two green senators. In Bray Town Council it was replaced by the green politician Steve Matthews.

In 2009, she ran unsuccessfully for election to the European Parliament. On 12 February 2010 de Búrca resigned from her post as senator, as she was no longer agree with the government policy of the Green Party. She is also a member of Wicklow County Council.
