Deline

Deline (pronounced De -la- nay ) is a settlement on the shore of Great Bear Lake ( Sahtu - " Bear Lake " called ) in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Until 1993 it was called Fort Franklin. The present name in the language of the North Slavey ( Dene Sahtu ): "Where the water flows " and refers to the upper reaches of the Great Bear River (English Great Bear River, abgel of Sahtu De - "Bear River "). Deline is located 544 km northwest of the city of Yellowknife.

Deline has about 650 inhabitants, mainly North Slavey ( Dene Sahtugotine or Bear Lake ), which together with the South Slavey ( Deh Cho ) the Slavey.

The region was known as the Eldorado Mine, about 250 km from Deline away, pitchblende was discovered. During the Second World War, the Canadian government took over the mine and began uranium production for the then still secret U.S. atomic bomb program. From the former village of Fort Franklin 1952, a permanent settlement by building a school.

The Sahtu Dene employed during transport of ore from Deline were not informed of the dangers of radioactivity, nor on Safeguards. Many of the men from the village died from cancer since the 1960s.

In order to maintain the airport of the settlement, the inhabitants are dependent on kerosene transports the ice road from Yellowknife. In this context, the series Ice Road Truckers plays in this settlement.

The public school is named after the ɂ ehtsǝo Erǝya designated as prophets.
