Delmas, Mpumalanga

Province

Delmas is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga. It is the seat of the municipality in the district of Victor Khanye Nkangala.

Geography

The city is located on the western edge of Mpumalanga, close to the border with the province of Gauteng. The area is part of the Highveld. Townships in northeastern Delmas are Delpark and Botleng ( Sesotho, German: the place of beauty ). Delmas had 2011 in the census 7,399 inhabitants.

History

Delmas was founded in 1907 in the field of farm Witklip. Their owner was Frenchman Frank Dumat who baptized the city Delmas after the French de le mas, about German: from the villa.

Began in 1985 in the Delmas Delmas Treason Trial ( treason trial of Delmas ). 22 anti-apartheid activists, including three leading members of the United Democratic Front, have been charged with treason. The method was later shifted to Pretoria and completed in 1988. Eleven of the defendants were sentenced to prison terms, but they were abolished in 1989 by the country's Supreme Court.

Economy and Transport

Delmas is a central place of an area in which mainly maize, wheat and potatoes are grown and poultry farming is operated. The Swedish engineering group Sandvik Mining and Construction operates in Delmas its main workshop for the underground coal mining machinery of the mines in the surrounding Karoo Supergroup or the main Karoo Basin. Machines are also Chance here waiting to be used on the Merensky Reef degradation and promotion of platinum and gold.

The city is located south of the M12 motorway, which links Johannesburg with the N4 at Witbank. The railway Johannesburg -Maputo runs from west to east through Delmas. Passenger trains do not keep in Delmas.
