Delosperma

Delosperma congestum

Delosperma is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words delos for 'open' and cum for seeds ' and refers to the fact that the seeds are visible in the opened capsules.

Description

The species of the genus Delosperma grow shrubby, rarely form nests are crawling or compact. Often, a taproot is formed, arise from the new branches. The internodes are papillose or smooth. Their fleshy leaves feel when you touch soft. They are flat to drehrund, usually more or less semi-circular with a concave up rinnigen top and a rounded convex base. There are bladder cells of different shape, size and density available. The stomata are not sunken in the leaf surface, although they are occasionally obscured by large, densely arranged bladder cells.

The flowers appear singly, but mostly available in large dichasialen inflorescences, often in cymes trained each year, together. The individual flowers are separated by more or less long internodes. There are trained five very unequal sepals. The petals are narrow to spoon-shaped. They are arranged in one to four groups. The color of the petals varies from white to pink, purple, yellow, salmon pink, orange and rust. They are rarely scarlet, karminfarben or wine colors. Filamentous staminodes are present. The nectary consists of five separate glands. The flowering period extends from spring to midsummer. The flowers open in the morning and close at night.

The fünffächrigen, pale-colored, hygrochastischen fruit capsules are funnel-shaped at the base, but the subjects are flat. Most are wide wing flaps and slats parallel source, but no partitions ceilings and no closing body available ( capsules from Delosperma type). The fruits contain mostly brown, spherical, smooth or papillary seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Delosperma is widespread in eastern Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, east of Mozambique, Réunion, in Saudi Arabia, central and eastern South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Yemen and in the south of Zimbabwe. The species usually grow in summer rainfall areas where fall annually usually rainfall of more than 400 millimeters.

The first description of the genus by Nicholas Edward Brown was published in 1925. The type species is Delosperma echinatum. The genus Delosperma include the following types:

Botanical history

There have been several attempts to structure the genus Delosperma infra generic. Louisa Bolus put 1927 on the subgenus Euryphyllum, in which they presented only the way Delosperma tradescantioides. Mary Lavis 1966 different five groups without taxonomic rank, which she described as Angustifolia, Planifolia, cymosa, carinata and Compressilatera. Three years later, she went a step further and divided the genus into 29 sections, of which she, however, only three valid described.
