N. E. Brown

Nicholas Edward Brown ( born July 11, 1849 in Redhill, Surrey, † November 25, 1934 in Kew, London ) was an English botanist and taxonomist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " NEBr. ".

He dealt with succulents, milkweed plants ( Asclepiadoideae ), ice plant family ( Aizoaceae ), Labiatae ( Lamiaceae ) and the Cape flora of South Africa.

Life

Brown, first curator of W. Wilson Saunders 's Museum in Reigate, began his work in 1873 as an assistant in the herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, from 1909 to 1914 he was Assistant Keeper there. In 1931 published drawings with detailed descriptions of succulents he reworked genus Mesembryanthemum. In addition, he published papers on the taxonomy of plants, especially the succulents. He is also the discoverer and describer of countless species of plants. In 1932 he was awarded for his contribution in relation to the flora of South Africa, Capt. Scott Memorial Medal of the South African Biological Society. He got beyond the honorary Doctor of Science from the University of the Witwatersrand. His publications have appeared, especially in the Kew Bulletin and in the Flora Capensis.

He was married to the daughter of Thomas Cooper, who was also a botanist at Kew.

In his honor, named Gustav Schwantes the genus Brownanthus the plant family of the ice plant family ( Aizoaceae ).
